Two-Time Olympic Gold Medalist: “Let’s Come From a Place of Inclusion and Respect” When Voting on Transgender Protections This November April 11, 2018

An eight year veteran of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team and a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Angela Hucles is all too familiar with having to face down obstacles on the playing field. However, she has continued to take her “can do” attitude and athlete’s work ethic into arenas outside the lines, and is now speaking out against the attempted repeal of Massachusetts’ non-discrimination law ensuring basic protections for transgender people in public spaces like restaurants, retail shops and medical offices.  If the law were to be repealed, transgender people would be denied the dignity and respect afforded everyone else in daily life. Hucles has been a proponent of equality her entire professional career, and has decided to take a public stance on nondiscrimination protections in order to use her profile to bring attention to the importance of the November vote.

During her career, she was drafted and played in the first women’s professional soccer league in the United States for the Boston Breakers, a former women’s professional soccer club based in the Boston neighborhood of Allston. So for Angela, Boston will always have a special place in her heart. In addition to her Olympic Gold Medals, Angela is also a two-time Bronze medalist in the Women’s World Cup.

Since retiring from competitive sports, Angela has served as the President of the Women’s Sports Foundation (2014-16) and is now a public speaker and entrepreneur. A proud queer woman, she feels passionately about supporting the transgender community:

“I’m proud of my time spent in Boston playing for the Breakers, and for our commitment to values like respect, inclusion and fair play. These values should transcend sport, and are the anchor for any flourishing community. It’s why I’m encouraging all MA residents to vote Yes to continue to protect transgender people across the state. Our efforts should always come from a place of inclusion and respect, and never isolation or exclusion. Let’s maintain these shared values and vote in favor of upholding dignity and respect for transgender people this fall.”

Freedom For All Massachusetts thanks Angela for her endorsement of our campaign to protect the transgender citizens of Massachusetts. Our campaign is proud to her have her backing, as well as the backing of every one of New England’s championship sports teams. View the entire coalition here.
