Faith leaders from all denominations, belief systems and backgrounds are speaking out for a ballot measure that would uphold equality and fairness for our transgender friends and neighbors.

Two years ago, people from across the Commonwealth supported an update to Massachusetts’ non-discrimination law. Finally, Massachusetts law protects transgender people from discrimination in public places like restaurants, retail shops and hospitals.

faith-leaders

Unfortunately, opponents of the law succeeding in placing these protections on the 2018 ballot, meaning Bay Staters must vote YES to uphold them when they go to the polls in November.

Otherwise transgender Bay Staters will be left vulnerable to discrimination.

Massachusetts faith leaders want to ensure that our Commonwealth’s laws continue to reflect the Golden Rule: Treat others as you want to be treated.

That is a core tenet of faith, and it’s why they’re joining the Freedom for All Massachusetts coalition. Join them:

Massachusetts Faith Leaders Pledge

As Massachusetts Faith Leaders, from a diversity of religious traditions committed to advancing the common good, we affirm the basic dignity of all people – including our transgender and gender non-conforming neighbors. We applaud the steps taken in 2016 by the Massachusetts Legislature and Governor to update existing public accommodations law and extend protections to our fellow transgender and gender non-confirming neighbors and friends.

We believe in treating others the way we’d like to be treated and respecting the dignity and worth of every human being. Finally in Massachusetts, there are explicit protections ensuring transgender people cannot be turned away from a hospital or denied service at a restaurant. We should all be treated equally under the law.

As Faith Leaders we are called to take a stand for those who face discrimination to repudiate acts of prejudice. The updated nondiscrimination law extends basic civil rights to those who too often live in fear of harm. We ask encourage our fellow clergy and indeed all people of faith to join us in this public commitment to equality, respect and justice for all.

Quotation MarkAs an African American Baptist I believe denying transgender Americans access to public spaces is eerily reminiscent of the country’s last century Jim Crow era denying blacks access to lunch counters, water fountains, and restrooms, to name a few. I know that policing my transgender brothers and sisters in public spaces also gravely impacts gender non-conforming people, as well as the rest of the community. Democracy can only begin when those at the margins have the same access to what others take for granted. That’s what the social gospel of Jesus instructs us to do.
Rev. Irene Monroe, “All Revved Up!,” on WGBH, Boston affiliate of NPR, Huffington Post blogger and syndicated religion columnist
Quotation MarkEvery year, during Passover, we tell the story of our people’s Exodus from Egypt, when we were enslaved simply because we were Jewish. The story reminds us, in our own time, that we should never discriminate against anyone, simply for being who they are. God created all of us equally with no qualifications. Gay and lesbian people were once denied these protections because of who they love. Now we must all stand by our transgender friends and neighbors to ensure that they too are protected against discrimination.
Rabbi Devon A. Lerner, DD, MSW
Quotation MarkLong before I took vows to serve as a Bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Mass., I believed deeply in my baptismal vows and strived to live them daily - love my neighbor as myself and strive for peace and justice, respecting the dignity of every human being. Vows and principles similar to these are found in all faith traditions and serve as a just and moral mandate for legislation that protects the dignity of our transgender neighbors in public places.
The Rt. Rev. Roy (Bud) Cederholm, Bishop Suffragan Diocese of Mass. (retired)
Quotation MarkOur Torah teaches, "Tzedek, Tzedek, Tirdof ~ Justice, Justice, Shall you pursue" (Deuteronomy 16:20). It is not enough to make the world more just by happenstance. Rather, it is something which we must all pursue. Working towards a world that is more just, more fair, more accessible to all, is simply another facet of Judaism's religious mandate.
Rabbi Michael Fel, Associate Rabbi at Temple Emunah of Lexington
