Region’s Largest Daily Editorial Board Endorses Upholding Transgender Anti-Discrimination Law
BOSTON – The Boston Globe Editorial Board has endorsed the ‘Yes on 3’ campaign in an editorial released today. The Yes on 3 campaign is the bipartisan coalition seeking to uphold the state’s transgender nondiscrimination law at the ballot on Election Day, November 6. The law, passed in 2016, protects transgender people from discrimination and harassment in public places such as restaurants, retail shops, and medical offices.
“Unlike some other ballot questions Massachusetts voters have faced over the years, this is not a complex issue,” the editorial reads. “What repeal opponents are pursuing is a solution in search of a problem. At a time when transgender rights are being threatened nationally in other areas, such as the military or health care access, now is the time to affirm equal rights protections for transgender individuals in Massachusetts by voting yes on 3.”
Earlier this week, the Boston Globe, WBUR, and UMass Boston co-hosted an hour-long debate on question 3.
In 2016, at the urging of civic, business and community leaders throughout the Commonwealth, the Massachusetts legislature passed – with a bipartisan, supermajority vote – the historic nondiscrimination protections for transgender people in public places.
Governor Charlie Baker signed the bill into law in July 2016. Shortly after it went into effect in October 2016, a small group of opponents gathered the minimum number of signatures required to places the law on the ballot for repeal in November 2018. Governor Baker has since endorsed voting yes on 3.
Freedom for All Massachusetts is the coalition working to uphold the state’s current nondiscrimination protections for transgender people in public places like restaurants, retail shops and hospitals, ensuring that Massachusetts continues to be a national leader on equality and fairness for all. A November 2018 ballot referendum will ask voters whether they want to retain the law, which has been effective since 2016.
